Golfing at Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu dates back to 1923, when guests could golf on a nine-hole course designed by golf pro Harry Black.  The golf course was set on agricultural land several kilometers from the hotel.

Canada Steamship Lines bought the hotel shortly thereafter.  With the growing popularity of the game and the Charlevoix area as well, the company decided to invest in a new golf course, which would be more accessible and far more spectacular.  Architect Herbert Strong was hired to design the new green gem that was opened in 1925 and inaugurated by William H. Taft.  Strong had already designed Lakeview in Toronto, as well as Inwood and The Engineers on Long Island.

Strong's incomparable golf course was carefully laid out over the rolling hills by the Manoir, overlooking the mighty St. Lawrence.  In 1929, a golf columnist wrote that the course offered 'something of an aerial view, as though one had been invited to hit balls from one cloud to another.'

Today, major investments are again being made in the golf course.  In April 2002, Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu announced a $14 million expansion project over the next four years.  The project will transform Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu Golf Club into a world-class golf complex and include : a new water supply infrastructure, a new 9-hole course designed by Graham Cooke & Associates, one of the largest architectural firms for golf clubs in Canada, as well as a new driving range.

Built near the new 1st hole and driving range, the new clubhouse will offer the most outstanding view of La Malbaie.  The Golf Academy will open its driving range this summer and will soon offer to its guests a space dedicated to learning and practicing all aspects of the game.

The panoramic trail will connect the hotel to the golf course.  With its exceptional view on the St. Lawrence River, it will make the player's experience unique by combining the challenging conquest of a high caliber golf course and an awe-inspiring landscape.

To complete these new additions, the totality of the original 18-hole will be renovated and re-designed.  To maintain a high quality golf course, which will cover 27-holes in 2006, the maintenance facility will also be renovated.

Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu Golf Club already enjoys an enviable reputation.  The Shield, a much-coveted trophy, and the establishment of the exclusive Cardinal Club in 1951 enhanced the club's reputation.  Today, the course is home to several tournaments, including the Jackie Desmarais Open and the Coupe Casino de Charlevoix on the 18-hole course of 6,105 yards.  In 2000, Golf Course Ranking recognized the high quality of the course and the overall experience at Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu.

The Canadian magazine ranked Le Manoir the Best Golf Course in Canada in the 'Resort' category and awarded in the double-platinum medal, which is the magazine's highest distinction in the category.
